From my recent trip back to Hong Kong, my birthplace, I had the luxury of eating these tasty treats called 火龍果. A direct translation is Fire Dragon Fruit, or more simply Dragon Fruit.
First thing in the morning after waking up, I would slice open once of these babies in two halves, take a spoon, scoop out the flesh, and savor the mildly-sweet, kiwi-like texture. Yup, just eat them like a dessert bowl! Another amazing part is that the seeds look like black sesame seeds.
I have never seen or eaten these while being in the U.S., never seen them in the grocery stores neither. Although Trader Joe’s did offer dried version of this fruit during the winter months of 2005.
I buy fresh dragon fruit in Chinatown, but I don’t recall seeing it in the “Western-style” (mainstream) supermarkets.
